Challenges facing Balloon Angioplasty?


For the most part, balloon angioplasty is a safe procedure and that is why it is performed so regularly. But as with most medical procedures, there are risks associated with balloon angioplasty. Some of these risks are relatively minor while others are more significant.

During any balloon angioplasty procedure, pieces of plaque debris can break off the artery wall and one of the challenges that doctors face while performing a balloon angioplasty procedure is to stop these pieces from traveling further down into the artery.

The PROTEUS™ device was developed to meet the challenges faced by physicians aiming at reducing the amount of liberated plaque, from blocking arteries, following lower limbs balloon angioplasty.


What is the PROTEUS™ device?

PROTEUS is a stand-alone angioplasty device that uniquely combines the dual functionality of balloon angioplasty and embolic capture and removal features. PROTEUS is indicated for lower limb arteries: femoral, iliac, ilio-femoral, popliteal, tibial, peroneal and profunda. It is first of its kind to receive FDA clearance for lower limb percutaneous angioplasty.

2-in-1 - How does the PROTEUS™ device work?

PROTEUS works just like an angioplasty balloon with the same physical and behavioral characteristics, such as inflation time, deflation time, pushability, and crossing profile. In addition, PROTEUS embolic capture feature involves a single-use suction mechanism that works through inward folding of the balloon, which creates negative pressure within the capture cavity for debris capture and removal. The reduced pressure in the capture cavity causes some of the particles that are released during the procedure to flow into the cavity for containment and removal.


The PROTEUS™ device was developed to meet the challenges faced by physicians aiming at reducing the amount of liberated plaque following lower limbs balloon angioplasty.

 

The PROTEUS™ device works in two ways. Firstly, it functions as an angioplasty device that behaves and functions just like any other angioplasty balloon. This means that your doctor can use PROTEUS™ to perform standard lower limb balloon angioplasty.

Secondly, PROTEUS™ has a unique feature that captures and removes  embolic material before the debris can travel further down into the artery. This feature is called the “embolic capture and removal feature”. 
 



   
   



The main advantage of the PROTEUS™ device is that it performs two functions in a single device. It behaves and functions as a standard angioplasty balloon while also capturing and removing debris before it travels further down the leg. Physicians can choose to replace standard angioplasty balloon with PROTEUS to perform Embolic Capture Angioplasty.

One of the significant benefits of having these two functions in a single device is that it is now technically easier to capture and remove plaque debris than it otherwise would be. PROTEUS™ main benefit is having these two functions in a single device. It is designed to present a simple to use, quick and cost effective alternative when treating blockage in the lower limbs.


 

   

 

The PROTEUS™ device has been tested in a clinical trial and the results proved its effectiveness as a standard angioplasty balloon that can also capture and removes embolic debris.
